January FPU Update

First of all, things are going well!  It was about this time last year that we freaked out about our finances and I started my no-spending spree.

We've gotten snow and JD has been able to plow, so we'll be able to start saving up for property taxes earlier this year.  We received Christmas gifts, a bonus for JD, and a third paycheck for JD in December so we made it through Christmas and repairs on JD's truck and plow, built back up the Emergency Fund (we used half when we needed 4 new tires unexpectedly), and replaced our nasty carpet with do-it-yourself pine floors.  We also paid the last payment (out of 36) of a loan from my grandfather.

We refinanced our house and rolled our HELOC (home equity line of credit) into the mortgage.  The HELOC was used to build our garage, so it makes sense for it to be part of the mortgage.  We paid off the car too, but we cheated by rolling that into the refinanced mortgage.  Adding the garage, the car, and all closing costs into the loan only increased it by about $15 a month due to much lower interest rates.

So... we're on to Baby Step 3!

Baby Step 1- Put $1000 in an Emergency Fund.  Check.
Baby Step 2- Pay off all debt except mortgage.  Check (But remember, we cheated with the car.)
Baby Step 3- Put 3-6 months of living expenses in an Emergency Fund.

At the end of each month, all money not needed for living expenses will go into the EF account.  Once we have enough for property taxes, we'll breathe a sigh of relief, and then continue adding to the account to build our EF up.  Now that we don't have a vehicle payment, we also need to start saving for when JD's truck needs to be replaced.  We don't want a gazillion different accounts, so all of the saving will be in the EF account, and when we get to the point of needing a truck, we'll take money out of the EF and then build it back up.  That's the plan anyway.  Vehicle loans are NOT part of the plan!

It literally took me 4 hours today to balance our checking account.  That's what I get for not dealing with it since the beginning of November.  I was only 75 cents off, but it annoyed me so much that I spent more time until it balanced perfectly.  I printed off a checkbook register template that is full page and find it much easier than figuring everything out in the little ones that fit in a checkbook.  I have duplicate checks and don't need to record everything immediately.  My goal is to balance the checking account at least once a month from here on out.

We're praying for more snow but will be okay if we don't get any!

I promised some pictures...

It was warm (for January) today with temps in the high 40s.  I went to Christa's and we took a nice 2 mile walk.  It was pretty brisk and windy on her road, but it was good to get out and get some exercise.

When I got home, Quin was still napping and Zeke was inside playing wii while JD and Ryley were taking care of the animals.  I snapped a few pics of our little "farm" and then JD got a few more.  Here they are!

JD and Honey, our female Nigerian Dwarf

Anakin, our wether (neutered male), and Honey.
JD and Ryley just added the "bridge" between the spools.

Ryley tells me that this is "Scape"

Ruby now lives with the chickens in their coop.
She shares their waterer, eats their grain, and sometimes sleeps in their nesting boxes.

Honey is the friendlier of the two goats.
They're still small enough to hold easily.

We can open the door between the chicken/rabbit run and the goat kennel for them to all play together.

The goats like to play "King of the Mountain."

This is the goat area.  We bought the window at a yardsale for $10 (new).
We still need to paint the flap door JD built so that they can go inside.
To the right you can see the chicken run door and the window above it can be opened
for ventilation in the summer.  The door between pens is the chain link panel to the right.

The animals enjoy their view of the valley.

To the right is the goat pen (built from old deck railings).
To the back is the chicken coop.
Ruby's hutch used to be to the left, but since she moved in with the chickens,
we used that space to store hay and grain for the critters.

A Quick Post

I was working on laundry this afternoon when JD called into the house and asked if I wanted to help him clean out the shed (aka the barn).  I laughed.  Then I realized that wasn't the nicest response, so I found my Carhartt overalls and sweatshirt, pulled them on over my pjs, and tromped outside in a pair of bulky boots.  Cleaning the shed is usually JD and Ryley's job, but she woke up with a fever and has been stuck to the couch all day.  It was actually enjoyable to be out there shoveling out used chicken and goat bedding.  I didn't bring my camera out, but I should have, as holding one of the goats and the bunny would have been a great photo op.

We had to get back into our school routine this week and I was utterly exhausted by last night.  The end of school vacation was spent finishing up our floors which included two nights of polyurethaning them after the kids went to bed, which required us to poly ourselves right into our bedroom.  The middle coat of poly was a morning coat, so that time we polyed (yes, I know that isn't a real word) ourselves into the kitchen and out of the house for the rest of the day.  The floors turned out well considering we've never done anything quite like it.  Laying laminate wood floors is a breeze compared to the real stuff.  We had been quite displaced during the floor project and are slowly putting the house back together.  I'm so happy not to be dealing with gross carpet in the living room anymore!

One of the highlights of my week was going out with some girlfriends for dinner.  It's nice to have friends to support and know that they'll do the same when it's your turn.  My dear friend Christa has been battling cancer for 7 years, and after a time of being relatively healthy is facing new chemo treatments again.  Please say a prayer for her.

Pictures tomorrow.  I promise.

New Year's Eve

I'm sitting in a motel room in a mediocre motel in Kenton, Ohio.  Mom, Dick, the kids, and I departed from home at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning and arrived about 12 and a half hours later.  For the first time ever, my youngest brother, Trav, wasn't able to come home for Christmas, so we came here instead.  We've spent the past couple of days visiting with him, Kara, nephew Gauge, and Kara's family.  We drove by lots of Amish farms today and got a glimpse of how differently, how simply, they live.  I couldn't pass Goodwill without stopping and found a pile of really nice clothes for Ryley.  Tonight, everyone else is out for dinner, but in order to preserve my sanity, I opted not to take my three munchkins out to a restaurant twice in the same day.  Instead, we are hanging out at the motel, eating candy out of the vending machine, swimming, and watching movies on the iPod and portable DVD player.  For the first time that I can remember, I probably won't stay up until midnight, and for the first time in 14 NYEs, I won't be with JD.  I'm glad we came though, to see where Trav and family lives, to see the house they're renovating and where he works.  I'm also ready to go home and to enjoy the last couple of days of vacation before getting back to the reality of school and work.

I forgot to bring my camera along, but if I had, I'd insert the following pictures:

Trav and Gauge on the snowmobile pulling Ryley and Zeke on a sled
Quin and Gauge playing together nicely (not of the many times Quin tried to hit or body check him)
The Amish farms and the horses and buggies we saw on the road
The kids enjoying the pool at the motel
Me falling flat on my arse (while carrying Quin) after slipping on ice this morning

JD has been busy at home.  We got more snow, so he was able to plow his route again.  In his "spare time" he's been putting flooring down in our dining area/living room.  We had hoped to be a lot further along on that project, hence me taking all of the kids with, but it's taking longer than expected.  His dad has been helping him, and I'm excited to see the progress they've made.

I'm looking forward to 2013 and all of the joys and challenges, blessings and hardships, and laughter and tears that will come with it.  And I'm looking forward to being home!

The most wonderful time of the year!

Actually, I prefer summer, but that has to do with the temperature outside and not Christmas!

Christmas 2012

There are so many things to love about Christmas.
Number one is the reason for Christmas.  When I was little, I had a pin that said "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" and that's as true for me now as it was back then.  Number two is family.  I love getting together with our families and extended families for gatherings that only happen this time of year.  Then of course, there is vacation from school, gift giving, the music, the food, and so much more!

On the last day of school before a break, many of my students came in with gifts.  Within days (an hour in some cases), JD, the kids, and I finished off homemade Chex mix and caramel popcorn, fudge, Lindt chocolate, and many more goodies.  I also received homemade gifts from students which are always treasured.  We had a small party as a class, made Helping Hands for Sandy Hook Elementary School, and then said our goodbyes until the new year.  I then had a nice, long visit with a good friend- the perfect start to my long vacation.

We enjoyed all of our family get togethers, big and small, and our kids were spoiled (not by us!) and are enjoying their gifts very much.  We got to meet our niece Marley, a little cutie.  It was also our nephew Braxton's first Christmas.  At each gift exchange, Quin liked his first present so much that he wasn't interested in opening anymore.  Ry and Zeke were more than happy to help him out.

Zeke really wanted a Pogo Ball!

Quin loves his Wheelies

and his new bike

and giving cousin Boone rides in his dump truck

Tired out.

I had hoped to be extremely productive the day after Christmas, but ended up super sick Christmas night and didn't get any sleep (seriously, zero minutes of sleep).  JD had to work all day, but my mom came over and helped me for a while in the afternoon, and the kids were pretty cooperative all day.  The following night I slept well and feel pretty much back to normal now.

We finally got snow today!  We haven't had this much snow in almost two years.  JD has been out plowing since 5:30 a.m. (It's almost 10 p.m. right now).  Although we've learned not to depend on plow money, it will make things less stressful financially.  The kids had fun out in it today, and tomorrow will be more of the same.

Ryley has a friend over for the night, Zeke is having a sleepover with cousin Max from Nantucket, and I have a busy day tomorrow that I'm not ready for.  I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas!

Dear Dad,

It's your birthday.  A December 12 will never go by without many of your loved ones thinking about you and shedding tears.  You'd be 57 this year.  I was just thinking the other day about how you were only 43 when you received your diagnosis of ALS, a death sentence.  I was away at college and missed seeing first hand how everyone reacted to the news.  I can't imagine how I would deal with news like that, knowing that my life would be cut short and that I wouldn't be able to watch all of my kids grow into adulthood.  I know that you remained strong, that you fought to live, that you did everything you could to live each day as fully as you were able.  I can't even type this now, nine years after your death without feeling tears run down my face.  You were a man who loved people and were loved in return.  I'm so thankful for the time that I had with you, that you were able to wheel down the aisle next to me on my wedding day to "present" me to my husband (because you said you weren't "giving me away"), and that you reached and surpassed your goal of living until your 25th wedding anniversary.  I was able to tell you that you would be a grandpa, although it will always sadden me that you never met her or any of your grandsons.  You loved kids and I can imagine the kind of grandfather that you would have been.  My kids know all about you, and they love to visit the cemetery where you are buried.  Zeke has often said, "I can't wait to go to Heaven so that I can meet Grandpa Zeke."  I'm glad that you had the faith that you did and that we all know without a doubt that you are in Heaven right now and that we will be reunited with you someday.  People say that the pain of losing someone goes away with time, and others say that they're wrong, that it never lessens.  I would say that the pain becomes more dull, but that when you least expect it, it's as sharp as ever.  We've all moved on with our lives, but after losing you long before we were ready, we've been left with a gaping hole in our hearts.  God had bigger plans for you, and even though I may never understand why, your death was part of His perfect plan.  Thanks for being the best dad a girl could have.

                                                   Love ya Zeker,

                                                          "Lulubelle"

November is over (almost)

I have been a pathetic blogger-wannabe.

Things have been busy, and when I have a few moments to myself, I'd rather disappear into a book or shop online than think of something to write about.  I am not going to let November go without a single post though, so here it is, even though I may not have anything important to say.

Some randomness:

At the beginning of the month, JD and I went to Albany, NY, for a night away.  What was supposed to be a fun, kidless, overnight shopping trip ended up being sort of bittersweet.  We almost didn't make it there when one of our tires suddenly got four random holes in it.  Three hours and four new tires later we were on our way.  (Thank you emergency fund for paying for those tires.)  We got some shopping and a nice dinner in and settled into our hotel room when we got the news that the mom of our dear friends had suddenly passed away.  Their dad had passed away just a week before, and Zeke was spending the night at their house while we were away.  We got in touch with them, but I couldn't sleep after hearing the news, and the next day we really just wanted to get home.

"Friend Thanksgiving" happened.  I only wish I had a bigger house and could invite more friends!  I think there were 19 of us, and we thoroughly enjoyed our pre-Thanksgiving meal and lots of yummy desserts.

We finished our FPU class and officially "graduated"!  While I'm glad we have our Monday nights to ourselves again, I'll miss the weekly class.  We're in the middle of trying to refinance our house and roll our garage loan into the mortgage payment.  And we're praying for snow for the plow guy!

We had hoped to go to Ohio over Thanksgiving break to visit my brother and his family, but his house wasn't ready, and we didn't think sleeping in a camper would go well with the little guy, so we decided to wait until they're in their house.  We had a low-key weekend at home instead and it was just what we needed.

The countdown to Christmas vacation is on- 14.5 school days (only 10 until we pull off our Christmas musical).  We're almost done our shopping- I've never come even close to being done this early.  We've got big plans for December!

Okay, I've posted.  And I'm going to try to be better in December.
